New Reading List

by Amazing on January 14th, 2012 at 8:38 pm

There was a list of classic books on someone’s Facebook page and I was interested in reading them. They are pretty intellectual – not just a quick, easy read. College level reading that requires critical thinking skills.

I wish I had one or two other people who would like to form a kind of a book club and read the same books with me. It would be more interesting if I had someone I could take to about what I’m reading.

Celebrating Elvis’ Birthday

Hard to believe that Elvis Presley would have been 77 years old today. Except he was weak, vain and addicted  to drugs. His life was over, whether he overdosed or not. He couldn’t hold it together, had the best of everything at his beck and call. And he still blew it. Not very inspiring for the rest of us common folks.

But I will give him credit for singing and swinging his hips in such a lewd way as to launch rock and roll as we all came to know it. Made some money on some really good songs, girls swooned, guys got laid. So it wasn’t a wasted life after all.

A New Year and a Resolution

by Amazing on January 1st, 2012 at 10:16 pm

So many people start the new year with the declaration that they are quitting smoking or going on a diet or going to the gym on a regular basis. Its a known fact that the gyms are busiest in the month of January, every year.

For me, I am making the resolution to temper my remarks and comments to be more gentle and kind. I will try to limit the use of sarcasm and never leave a family member or friends with a bitter remark stinging in their memory. It will be hard – but I shall prevail.

Top Gear on BBC

Flipping through cable channels I ended up on the BBC America channel during a Top Gear show. I had never heard of this TV show, but evidently it is the number 1 show in Britain. I have to admit, it is great fun to watch. The three guys who are co-hosts are like a British version of the Three Stooges. So funny to watch and full of antics.

Do You Peek?

by Amazing on December 24th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

When you have all the Christmas presents under the tree and you are so excited about opening the gifts, do you really wait until Christmas morning to open the presents? Or do you peek?

My in-laws have a big party at their house on Christmas Eve and everyone at the party opens their gifts on Christmas Eve. Then the next day they go to the homes of the other sets of parents or stay at their own homes and open gifts for a second round.

I also have a friend who has the “tradition” of letting each kid pick one gift on Christmas Eve, before Santa arrives, and open one before they go to bed. I don’t like her so-called tradition. It stinks of self indulgence to me. Also, she lets the kids wake up whenever and go down and tear open the presents, even if she is still sleeping. I can’t believe that she thinks this is OK.

In my opinion, the family should wait until Santa has come, get up at a reasonable hour on Christmas morning and eat breakfast, then gather around the tree and take turns opening the gifts. Each gift should be shown off, displayed and appreciated in turn.
